About the Construction and Renovation Project:
You have the choice of where you want to be located for this programme! You can be based in Lovina, Ubud or Lombok in Bali.
There are always ongoing community projects that could use a couple of hands. The volunteer projects include renovating libraries, playgrounds, local schools and anything that might need a helping hand at the time!
This volunteer project welcomes anyone willing to get their hands dirty and is willing to learn & make a true difference to a community. This is a great opportunity for you to put your skills to use if you are a qualified builder/self proclaimed handyman (or lady) or are thinking about starting an apprenticeship.
What will I be doing at The Bali Construction Project?
Your first week will be the introduction week to get you adjusted to the Bali way of life & allow you to explore the culture & various attractions with your fellow international volunteers who arrived on the same day as you. Pickups are on Sundays, every week of the year. You will then be transferred up to our base in Ubud or Lombok depending on your location choice.
For Lovina & Ubud, you will have your orientation in Ubud. If you have selected Lombok, you will have one day there.
  • The minimum stay on the project not counting your Introduction week is one week.
  • You can extend your stay on the project or choose a different project as your next week.
See our Bali Adventure Balance Trip for inspiration of how you can customise your time in Bali.
  • Through participating in this social project, you will make a difference to the local community by supporting local families and children, and providing them with better living conditions.
  • You will work alongside a local coordinator who provides guidance and training alongside local families and other participants.
  • The project involves hard physical and manual labour, as you will be laying bricks, doing carpentry, painting, laying tiles, and landscaping/gardening.
  • The other side of this project involves a more artistic and relaxed environment, where participants are in charge of renovating and creating drawings and painting in several kindergartens as well as primary schools. This activity is fun, and we support initiative and creativeness during the process.
  • A qualified builder will be with you at all times on your project site as well as an English speaking coordinator. You’ll be transferred daily to your placement sites and will have plenty of freedom to explore everything which people go to Bali & Lombok for with your fellow international participants. Your local coordinators are also able to assist you with your weekend plans to make sure you’re looked after
Location Choices: Ubud, Lombok or Lovina
Volunteer in Ubud – Bali
Ubud is described as the cultural heart of Bali. Located in the cool mountains, it’s famous for its rice paddy fields, temples, arts and crafts, restaurants, markets, monkey forest and not to mention that it’s the best place for cheap massages (approx. NZ$10 for an hour).
You’ll be based at one of the main volunteer bases where you have the introduction week. If you want to eat out occasionally, there is a wide selection of restaurants with high standards of both international and local cuisine. There are several cafes in the village, where you can relax and hang out with other participants on your spare time.It takes about 5 minutes by car or 20 minutes by walking to the centre of village.
Accommodation Ubud
The accommodation is located in Pejeng Kaja which has shared rooms including facilities as well as enough space for you to interact and enjoy your time in Bali. There are 2 centres in Pejeng which are specially furnished for volunteers. Private upgrades are available. If you select the private accommodation option, you will be given a private room with an attached bathroom.
Would I enjoy Ubud?
This is the most popular location & is the largest. If you’d like a bigger group of volunteers, and be close to one of the main destinations in Bali to experience the nightlife & shopping, then Ubud is for you!
If you are on a budget, this is also the lowest cost option of the three.
Volunteer in Lovina – Bali
Lovina is located between the Bedugul mountains and the sea. It is famous for it’s pink sand dolphin watching, trekking, hot springs and its gorgeous coral reefs. Lovina is a great destination for those wanting to be located in a quieter part of Bali and to be based near the beach.
Our houses are located in Tukad Mungga village and it will take about 10-15 minute to Lovina centre.
There are several cafés and beaches in the village where you can relax and hang out after your program ends.
It’s also easy to reach popular destinations during the weekends such as The Gili Islands, Nusa Lembongan, Ubud, Sanur, Kuta and Uluwatu.
Accommodation Lovina
You will be accommodated in one of our houses in the village of Tukadmunga. Located on the street and it’s just a five minute walk to the beach.Village life is quintessentially local and you will get a good chance to see typical Balinese life – roosters crowing and all!
For couples or those wanting more privacy, there are upgrade accommodation options available for an additional cost per week. Please contact us in advance to check for the possibility for that program period.
(Programme fees for Lovina are slightly more than Ubud & Lombok)
Would I love Lovina?
If you are wanting to be in a more peaceful village on the mainland of Bali, choose Lovina. Plus if you’d like to be able to relax on the beach during your free time (which is a 5 minute walk away from your accommodation), then Lovina is for you!
Volunteer in Lombok – Bali
Lombok is an Indonesian island east of Bali and west of Sumbawa, known for its picturesque beaches and prime surfing area. The motor-vehicle- free Gili Islands, off Lombok’s west coast, offer more beaches, reefs for diving and snorkeling, and a sea turtle hatchery. It differs considerably from its neighbouring islands, with lots of wide-open spaces and unspoiled beaches, and much less traffic and pollution.
Some people prefer to visit Lombok in Indonesia over Bali as it is much quieter, plus food and attractions are often a good deal cheaper.
Accommodation Lombok
Volunteers stay at our Centre in Senggigi. The accommodation is dorm style with bunk style beds. There are also refrigerators at the houses. No private upgrades are available for Lombok.
Would I love Lombok?
Lombok is a less touristy place, and is suited to those who in their free time would like to go diving, surfing, trekking, visit historical temples, and handicraft villages. It’s also great for going out at night or eating. One of the most popular surf spots for locals and tourists alike is Senggigi Beach.
If you are travelling with a friend – let us know and we can make sure you are accommodated in the same dorm room or if you’d like to split the costs of a private comfort upgrade.
  • Indonesian food is really tasty and diverse and you can expect to experience a myriad of flavours and meals during your stay.
  • Typical dishes include mie goreng (fried noodles and vegetables), nasi goreng (fried rice and vegetables) or gado gado (mixed vegetables with a satay sauce).
  • For those who do not eat meat, Indonesian cooking uses a lot of tofu and tempeh (soy beans), we also provide some western dishes. Breakfasts are varied and include pancakes, fresh fruit, toast etc
  • You will receive three meals per day during weekdays and two meals per day on weekends (as volunteers usually go out for the weekend).
  • Water, tea, coffee and milk are all included.
Things to note:
  • There will be a construction material surcharge of 40 EUR per week for Lovina & Lombok
  • For all programs, it is imperative to remember that any money raised to help your project when you arrive in Bali will be very well received. Often it is hard for the participants to bring too many supplies due to limitations on baggage weight but remember that Bali has some very developed shopping centres where supplies can be bought once you have arrived in the country.
  • This is our recommended and preferred way to contribute to the program. Not only does it mean you do not have to cart the supplies on the plane with you, it means any money you spend will be invested back into the Indonesian (Lombok) economy.
