Imagine swapping your everyday routine for mornings on the South African coast, days spent out on the ocean, and unforgettable encounters with some of the world’s most incredible marine wildlife. The Marine Big 5 programme gives you the chance to experience life on the Western Cape while contributing to meaningful marine conservation. From sharks and whales to penguins and seabirds, every day brings something different.
Get Up Close With Incredible Marine Wildlife
One of the biggest highlights of the Marine Big 5 programme is the opportunity to get involved with shark cage diving adventures. Volunteers assist with guests and experience the excitement of seeing sharks in their natural environment. During whale season from June to December, you may also assist with whale-watching experiences and witness these incredible animals along the South African coastline.
Make Your Adventure Mean Something
This isn’t just about seeing wildlife. The Marine Big 5 programme gives you opportunities to contribute to the protection of the marine environment. You could help with penguin and seabird rescue and rehabilitation, take part in marine pollution clean-ups, support eco-education activities, and work alongside people passionate about protecting the ocean.
You’ll also gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing marine ecosystems and why conservation work matters. It’s an incredible opportunity for anyone interested in wildlife, conservation or marine biology, but you don’t need to be studying these subjects to get involved.
Live by the South African Coast
When you’re not out on the water, you’ll be living the coastal life. Volunteers on the Marine Big 5 programme stay in volunteer cottages with access to a pool, garden and beautiful coastal surroundings. You’ll share the experience with other volunteers, giving you the chance to meet people from around the world while creating plenty of memories together.
And when conditions mean it’s a no-sea day, the adventure doesn’t have to stop. Use your free time to explore the region, including Cape Agulhas, fascinating heritage caves and South Africa’s famous wine country.
Start Your Ocean Adventure
Getting started is easy, with the Marine Big 5 programme welcoming volunteers on Mondays. Simply arrive in Cape Town on the Sunday before your start date, and we’ll organise your accommodation and project pickup.
If you’ve been dreaming about doing something completely different, this could be your chance. Trade the desk for a boat deck, experience South Africa’s incredible coastline and come home with more than photos. You’ll have stories, new friendships and the experience of contributing to something that genuinely matters.
