What to do when one year in America just isn’t enough
So, you’ve spent 12 months living, working, and exploring the USA on a J1 Visa – and now you’re wondering: Can I stay longer?
You’re not alone. So many IWH travellers fall in love with their American lifestyle, new friends, and incredible job experiences. The good news? While the J1 can’t be extended itself, there are options if you want to stay in the USA a bit longer – or come back again later.
Here’s how it works.
Use Your 30-Day Grace Period
After your J1 Visa officially ends, you have a 30-day grace period to stay in the USA for travel – but not to work. This is your chance to:
- Road trip with your mates
- Visit cities you missed
- Relax before heading home
- Say proper goodbyes to the people and places that shaped your year
Just make sure you leave the country before your grace period expires, or it could affect future visa applications.
Apply for Another J1 (If You’re Eligible Again)
The J1 program can be used once per academic level, so if you:
- Complete a new degree (like a postgrad or second qualification)
- Or switch fields and qualify again as a new graduate
…you might be eligible to apply again!

Explore Other Visa Options (If You Have an Employer Who Wants You Back)
Some J1 participants build strong relationships with their US employers – so strong, in fact, that they want to offer a longer-term position. If that’s the case, your employer may be able to sponsor you under a different type of US visa.
These are harder to get and involve more paperwork, but if your employer is keen, it’s worth exploring. We recommend chatting with an immigration lawyer in the States or getting in touch with Bianca at IWH for general guidance on where to begin.
Take What You’ve Learned and Apply It Elsewhere
Even if you can’t extend your stay, your J1 year can open doors globally. Many IWH travellers use their USA experience to:
- Land jobs in tourism or hospitality back home
- Apply for other working holiday visas (like Canada or Japan)
- Gain confidence for longer-term overseas travel
- Reapply for new international programs through IWH

Come Back With a New Program
