Rhino Guardian Course
Rhinos are being poached at an alarming rate in Africa and this course gets you up close and personal with the inspiring Anti Poaching Unit (APU) in Namibia.
Located near our Namibia Wildlife Sanctuary, this 14 night course runs once a month where you will spend the time out in the bush together with our APU team joining them on their patrols, learning about bush survival, the science of poaching and about tracking and the use of firearms.

What will I learn about ?
This unique opportunity allows volunteers to experience and learn from our inspiring Anti-Poaching Unit (APU), who dedicate their lives to protecting wildlife.
Based on a 7600 hectare reserve, Rhino Guardians will follow a fixed 14 night schedule where they will spend the time out in the bush together with our APU joining them on their patrols, learning about bush survival, the science of poaching and about tracking and the use of firearms.
What will I be doing on The Rhino Guardian Course?
During the 14 night course, you will have the privilege of working with the inspiring Namibia Anti Poaching Team whose background will provide you with a wealth of knowledge and experience!
Example Week
  • Anti Poaching, Navigation and Bush Skills
  • Anti Poaching Patrol
  • Sleep out patrol at observation points
  • Clean up camp to transfer camps
  • Lecture on tracking and firearms
  • Lecture done on Bush survival and science of poaching
  • Braii at nights while in the bush
  • Each team does a full day patrol in different sectors
  • Each 7 days teams swap camps and after 14 days come out of the bush
We can accommodate a maximum of 8 volunteers at a time who will be split over 2 camps. The cost of this 2-week program includes basic accommodation in our tented camp or sleep outs in the bush at observation positions. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and camping towel. . 2 special APU uniforms will be provided per person.
Accommodation
  • When you arrive you will stay one night at the Wildlife Sanctuary in tented camps
  • In the bush and while on patrol you will sleep in your sleeping back at observation points or in bush camps
  • Your last day will also be at the Wildlife Sanctuary
Meals
  • You will be provided food rations which you will cook together with the APU
  • We cannot cater to any dietary requirements
Course Dates
The Rhino Guardian Course starts from the 1st Monday of each month
You may add on any other Namibia add on project before or after this course depending on availability
What to bring
The following are included and provided to all volunteers on arrival:
  • 2 x green uniform sets (pants and shirts)
  • Webbing (military equipment)
  • Dixie set
  • Plates, cups and cutlery
  • Food rations
Volunteer project list to be brought from home:
  • Neutral colour clothing (green, olive, brown)
  • Comfortable walking shoes (boots)
  • Neutral colour bush hat
  • Neutral colour rain coat
  • Sleeping bag
  • Binoculars
  • Flashlight
  • Camera
  • Knife – multitool (pack in checked baggage)
  • Small first aid kit
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Toiletries
  • 60lt back pack
  • 25 – 35lt back pack
  • Any survival gear you want to test or use (compass, ghillie suit, night vision lens)
