8 Days of Horses - a Typical Day on your NZ Horse Adventure
This gives you a rough idea of each week - plans could change around due to weather, participants, activities etc.
Wake up at your leisure – for the early birds there are wonderful walking tracks or even a country road run to get the body started, before heading across to the homestead at 9am for a real hearty country cooked breakfast including bacon, free range eggs and hash browns.
We then head on out to the horses, where we will spend the next couple of hours learning how to understand and read a horse, how to influence their body and feet which ultimately will connect you to their mind. The lessons are packed full of information, practical and theory and lots of one on one help and guidance.
You will team up with a horse who will be your partner for the duration of the stay. You will work with your horse partner mainly on the ground for the first lesson, and the rest of the lessons we will continue the groundwork theme but will spend the bulk of the time in the saddle. Once we have finished up and attended to the horses, a yummy packed lunch will be supplied for you to eat at your leisure and at your choice of place – a shady spot down by the spring fed creek, back at your accommodation, on the courtyard at the homestead, it’s up to you.
For those on the NZ Horse Adventures 100% Horse Option, the rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. There is plenty to do and see, so feel free to chat with us as to what is available. Depending on the afternoon adventures planned for the day, you can grab a ride into town. You are welcome to play or muck around as much as you like with your horse partner again on site after 3pm.
For those on the NZ Horse Adventures - Combo Option which we highly recommend, you are about to get ready for an afternoon of pure adventure!! Each afternoon we will whisk you off to a uniquely chosen adventure activity to experience in Rotorua.
- a 2 hour very scenic and historical horse trek followed by a geothermal pool soak
- An up close and personal encounter with the NZ Falcon and then off to experience the culture and food of the Maori people
- Flying through beautiful native New Zealand forest on a zip line
- Drive a four wheel drive through some pretty hairy New Zealand bush just like how a kiwi bloke does it
- Cruise the stunning waters of Lake Tarawera and season dependant catch a big trout that it is famous for
- There is an afternoon off for you to catch your breath, head to town for some shopping and a coffee, catch up on emails and washing and just relax.
- Then it’s back into it the next day with an exhilarating jet boat trip to a Geothermal park and lastly you will put everything you learnt with your horse partner into practise with a ride out to your last adventure for the stay and see what New Zealand farm life is all about
(This last activity is included in the 100% Horse Option also).
You will be so busy experiencing what fantastic things we have on offer here in New Zealand and learning how to work with a horse rather against it that we guarantee you will work up an appetite. We feed you just like you are part of the family! We provide good home cooked food with a main meal followed by a yummy dessert.
We welcome you to join us in our home at the homestead for all meals which are provided; except for the free afternoon and for the 100% Horse option you also have an own arrangement dinner on Day 2; but don’t worry there is a very stocked yummy snack fridge provided at your accommodation which is full of some real kiwi favourites that you just have to try when you are here and guaranteed to fill you up.
The programs operate on a working lifestyle farm so there is always something to be done!
Feeding the herd and stock, feeding the chickens, collecting eggs, harrowing paddocks, picking up manure on the track and dry lot, cleaning gear, plus three energetic dogs needing exercise, grooming horses, trimming hooves, weeding paddocks, checking water troughs, checking and maintaining fences, the list is endless. You are welcome to participate as little or as much as you like in these farm activities.
Your cabin accommodation is located next door to the homestead and although is basic dorm style, is super quiet, clean and very peaceful. It is set in some beautiful grounds full of New Zealand bush and native song birds. It is a working site that breeds and releases all the trout in the surrounding lakes. You can learn and watch more about this process if you wish at the Hatchery building. It is a peaceful location which you will have wonderful night’s sleep ready for the next day’s adventure.
